In honor of Earth Month, we wanted to share how Brookfield Properties’ sustainability program exemplifies best-in-class resource management, environmental performance, and community engagement. Across our Houston portfolio, we focus on five key areas within sustainability – energy, waste, water, carbon, and wellness – and Allen Center is a prime example of our sustainability efforts.

Landscaping plays a huge role in environmental sustainability. As part of Phase I of the Reimagining of Allen Center, we revitalized what was previously a courtyard housed between One, Two, and Three Allen Center into a beautifully landscaped one-acre greenspace named The Acre. More than 170 tree species were planted, including the Texas-native Overcup Oak and the adaptive Allee Elm and Chinese Pistache. All were chosen based on their durability and were cultivated for Houston’s urban climate. Fun fact: the trees on The Acre will sequester an estimated 26,160 pounds of carbon per year, which offsets driving approximately 35,586 miles in an average car.

The recent completion
of Phase II of the Reimagining of Allen Center further highlights our commitment to creating sustainable and healthy environments for our tenants. Three Allen Center now offers a new bike room which encourages our tenants to use alternative modes of transportation to and from the office and can help reduce carbon emissions within the city.

Our environmental and operational best practices have led to recognition, certifications, and designations from all over the globe, including Allen Center being LEED Gold certified and Energy Star rated.

We understand the importance of environmental stewardship and we understand that we have not only an immense opportunity, but also a responsibility, to make every aspect of our business as sustainable as we can. That is why we are so proud to be participating in Lights Out Texas, an initiative that aims to protect migrating birds by turning off all non-essential lights from 11 p.m. – 6 a.m. during the critical peak spring migration period from April 19 – May 7. During this time, we will be turning off the roof accent lights across our Houston portfolio.
When it comes to sustainability, we believe that building a better world for our communities begins with us. We are proud of our current sustainability efforts and we plan to continue to be thoughtful in our future sustainability endeavors.
